Five Changes Expected in Twitter After Elon Musk Takeover
Yes, Elon Musk’s Twitter acquisition is hitting roadblocks recently and a lot of drama is still expected in the coming days. Nevertheless, the buzz is that Elon Musk will eventually take over Twitter in a few months.
Musk has always been open about his opinions. Regular Twitter users know how much popular a personality Musk is on Twitter for his comments. He often expressed his likes and dislikes about a lot of Twitter features through his tweets. With his takeover coming in the next few months, here are a few interesting changes in Twitter we can expect,
Edit Button Could Make Its Debut
The edit button is long overdue. The debate of whether Twitter should have an Edit button or not is a classic argument for a long time. Elon Musk recently conducted a Twitter poll and 74 percent of the voters are in favor of an Edit button. Twitter also in their recent statement mentioned that they are working on adding an Edit button.
Once Elon Musk takes over Twitter, the feature will be soon introduced. It will be interesting to see what limitations the Edit button will still carry. Because when you allow users to edit a tweet, there are always chances for havoc to take place. So, the limitations on using the Edit button must have to be very efficient to make the feature a hit.
Twitter recently attempted to introduce the Edit button to Twitter Blue (Twitter’s paid subscription) users. But the feature received more negative reviews because the Edit did not actually work as an Edit button. You are only allowed to edit the tweet before posting and never after that.
Let’s see how Twitter now approaches the Edit button to make it a successful feature.
Elimination Of Bots
Musk has openly voiced against bots several times. It is no secret that there are a lot of bot accounts on Twitter. Twitter right now is not completely against bots. In a recent update, Twitter categorizes bots as good and bad bots and eliminates the bad bots from Twitter. Once Elon Musk takes control, it is expected that most of the bots will be eliminated.
In fact, bots are the reason for the takeover being stalled now. It was earlier informed by Twitter that there is approximately 5 percent of bot accounts on Twitter. But Twitter has failed to prove the same and Elon Musk says that the number could be significantly higher. We will have to wait for Twitter’s response on the same.
Open Source Algorithms
Twitter is no stranger to ‘Open Source Algorithms’. A lot of Twitter algorithms are already open source. But there are still a lot of vital algorithms that aren’t open source yet.
Elon Musk’s ultimate aim is to make Twitter an Open Source platform. A completely Open Source platform will plant a greater trust in the popular social media platform. Any manipulation or influence can be easily picked up by anyone and can subsequently raise concerns about them. This definitely will boost the popularity of Twitter more than ever before.
Musk believes that making Twitter algorithm open source can skyrocket the potential of the platform. The change indeed will be welcome if implemented.
A Paywall Can Be Incoming
In one of his recent tweets, Elon Musk mentioned the idea of using a paywall for a specific category of users on Twitter. Musk insisted that Twitter will be always free for the general audience. Government officials/ Commercial users might be asked to use a premium account for their purposes.
However, it is unclear what the structure of Twitter will be with a paywall. At the moment, it is just an early idea and we have to wait and see if Musk actually goes forward with this approach as this can also have negative implications on the platform.
Right now, Twitter is having ‘Twitter Blue’ as their product for premium users. Once Elon introduces his proposed paywall method, ‘Twitter Blue’ will most probably be discontinued.
A Better Free Speech Policy
Musk has iterated multiple times about the importance of ‘Free Speech’ in a platform like Twitter. So once he takes over, we can expect that a lot of content guidelines will have major changes. According to him, a user can tweet anything which is not against the law regardless of the implication.
While his idea of Free Speech can be debatable, we can expect more lenient policy adoptions by Twitter soon. Whether his idea of Free Speech will make Twitter a better place is a question for which we need to wait to find the answer.
Conclusion
Once Musk takes over, we can expect an array of changes in Twitter coming our way regularly. Most of the initial changes will be from the points we have already discussed here. There could be more too.
